The main functions of Companies House are:

To incorporate and dissolve limited companies

To examine and store company information delivered under the Companies Act and related legislation

To make this information available to the public

The Registrar of Companies

There are two registries for the UK. Companies House in Cardiff deal with the administration for companies registered in England and Wales. Similarly Companies House in Edinburgh deal with the administration for companies registered in Scotland.

There is also an information centre in London, however it is not possible to register companies at this location.

History of Companies House

The United Kingdom has enjoyed a system of company registration since 1844. Today, company registration matters are dealt with, in law, by the Companies Act 2006.

All limited companies in the UK are registered at Companies House, an Executive Agency of the Department of Trade and Industry. There are more than 3 million limited companies registered in Great Britain , and more than 500,000 new companies are incorporated each year.

Registering a limited company at Companies House

There are two options available for registering a limited company. You can either use an Agent or you can deal with Companies House directly yourself.

If you deal with Companies House directly they are not permitted to advise or guide you on the best way to form your company for your circumstances. In the event you do not know what is the best way to create your share structure, or maybe create the prescribed particulars, you are not able to ask for specific assistance from Companies House as this would be seen as advice which they are not permitted to give. Using an agent such as ourselves will afford you the benefit of extensive guidance in all aspects of a company formation. We will make a few assumptions to simplify the process and remove the unnecessary complexity that is not often required for a typical company registration.
