What is a registered office?

The registered office is the official address of the company. This is held on record by Companies House and displayed on the public register. Companies House and HMRC will send the company’s notices to this address. These include reminders to file accounts and company returns. They will not write to any other address.

It is essential that the company uses and maintains an effective address. Failure to respond to a government notice may lead to a penalty being issued or the company being dissolved. Directors have a responsibility to file accounts and returns on time.

It is common for companies to use their office, shop, factory or other physical location as the recorded registered address. However, if you are a home based business, based outside the UK or you often move location then you may choose to purchase a registered office service.

You can find detailed information on the registered office address here.

Please note Companies House processing times are an estimate only and not guaranteed.
