On which documents must the company name be shown?

Limited companies must display their company name, number and place of registration on all official company documents.

The company is legally required to include the following information on company stationery:

• Full company name as registered at Companies House
• Company Number
• Place of registration (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland)
• The registered office address
• If the company is ‘not for profit’ and permitted to omit Limited or Ltd from its company name then the stationery should include a statement that the company is limited by guarantee

This information should be included in most of the company’s official communication. This also includes electronic communication:

• All the company's business letters
• Order forms
• Faxes
• All its legal notices and other official publications
• Website's owned by the company
• Email communication

 For other communications and stationery it is allowed to simply include the registered business name. This includes:

• Bills of exchange
• Promissory notes
• Endorsements
• Cheques
• Orders for money or Goods purporting to be signed by, or on behalf of, the company
• Receipts
• Letters of credit
• Business Cards
• Other general stationery for the company

Most companies will happily display this information. This can be done discretely on letterheads and placed sensibly on website contact pages. The law does not state that you must display your company number across the top of your website.
